The welcome email is the most important one you'll ever send
Every new subscriber reads the welcome email. Open rates are highest on day one, and the tone you set here is the tone subscribers will expect forever. Most welcome emails waste this moment with a generic "thanks for signing up."
Do the opposite: deliver something useful immediately, make the promise explicit, and give them a reason to open the next issue.
The template
Subject: what you just signed up for (be specific). Opening: thank them briefly, then deliver something useful in the first paragraph - a tip, a resource, a piece of content they can use today. Middle: the promise - what they'll get and how often. Close: one question that invites a reply. A welcome email you can reply to converts faster than one that feels like a broadcast.
Write it in the voice of every issue that follows
The welcome email previews the entire relationship. If it sounds more formal or polished than your regular issues, you've created a gap the subscriber will notice. Write it in the same register as the newsletter itself.
