The rule that separates relationship DMs from spam
A DM that opens with a pitch is spam regardless of the platform. A DM that opens with a genuine observation about something the other person posted, published, or said is the beginning of a real conversation. The intent reads through the structure.
Openers to adapt
Post reference: "Read your thread on [topic] - the part about [specific] is something I've been thinking about for a while. How did you arrive at that?" Shared context: "We were both in [event/community] and I wanted to reach out directly." Mutual interest: "You mentioned [X] in your newsletter - I've been wrestling with the same thing." Each one is about them, not you.
Let the relationship happen before the pitch
A DM conversation that goes: message, reply, message, reply, pitch - in that order - has a far higher conversion rate than a DM that pitches immediately. Build the conversation over several exchanges before introducing what you do.
