What Makes a Post Worth Sharing

July 24, 2026 · 5 min read

A share costs the reader something. Understanding why they do it changes everything.

Sharing is identity expression

A like is private. A share is public - it attaches the reader's name to your content and says, implicitly, "this reflects how I see things." People share content that makes them look smart, that expresses something they've felt but couldn't articulate, or that they want to give to a specific person who needs it.

This is why sharing a post is a different act from enjoying one. You can enjoy a funny video and not want it attached to your professional identity. Shares carry social cost and social reward at once.

Write the sentence they've wanted to say

The highest-share content is almost always content that puts into words something the reader has been thinking without the language for it. When someone reads a post and thinks "this is exactly it" - not "interesting" but "exactly it" - they share it to give the words to someone else who needs them.

That kind of resonance comes from specificity and from taking a real position. A hedged, balanced take is easy to agree with and impossible to share with the energy of recognition.

Make the share a gift to a specific person

Design each post with a specific reader-to-reader share in mind. Who shares this to whom, and why? If the answer is clear - a founder shares it to another founder who asked about this last week; a creator shares it to their community as a resource - the post will earn shares. If the potential share is vague, the post likely gets a passive like at best.
