The Anatomy of a Scroll-Stopping Hook
June 24, 2026 · 5 min read
What actually makes a first line stop the thumb.
Open a loop, don't summarize
A summary tells the reader they already know enough to scroll. A loop tells them the payoff is a second away. "Here's how I grew my audience" summarizes. "I almost deleted the post that got me my first 10,000 followers" opens a loop the reader wants closed.
Specific beats clever
Specificity is credibility. A precise detail, a named moment, an unexpected number signals a real story and stops the thumb, where a clever-but-vague line just slides past. Write ten openings and keep the one that would stop you - hooks are cheap to draft and expensive to get wrong.
