The Editing Instinct vs. the Publishing Instinct

August 16, 2026 · 4 min read

The skill is not editing or publishing - it's knowing which to do and when.

Two instincts that conflict

Every content creator has two instincts that fight each other. The publishing instinct says: get it out, perfect is the enemy of done, the only post that helps anyone is the one that exists. The editing instinct says: this isn't quite right yet, one more pass, this sentence isn't earning its place.

Both instincts serve a real function and both can be pathological when taken too far. Dominated by publishing, you ship content that hasn't been thought through. Dominated by editing, you never ship at all.

Where each instinct belongs

The editing instinct belongs in the first draft - catching the argument that doesn't hold, the opening that doesn't earn the read, the weak ending. The publishing instinct belongs after one good revision pass: if it's better than nothing and at least a little useful, it should go. The cycle ends there.

The trouble starts when editing becomes a mechanism for avoiding the vulnerability of publishing. Recognizing that pattern in yourself - and shipping anyway - is how the publishing instinct wins long-term.
