The Agency Voice Problem

July 31, 2026 · 5 min read

No one falls in love with a brand. They fall in love with a person.

Brand voice is not enough

The agency content problem goes deeper than brand guidelines. An agency can have a perfectly documented tone, a consistent visual identity, and a well-run posting schedule - and still produce content that no one in particular would have written. Because no one in particular did. Brand voice describes what the content should feel like; it can't substitute for a real person's convictions behind it.

The founder voice fix

The agencies that break through on content almost always have a visible founder or lead - someone whose real perspective, real opinions, and real voice anchor the whole content presence. The agency brand is secondary; the person is primary. This is not a new insight in brand theory, but most agencies resist it because it feels like a dependency on a single person.

That dependency is real. It's also the only thing that makes the content feel like it came from somewhere. The alternative is content that could have come from anywhere, which is the same as coming from nowhere.
